Body Shape Guide

We all have different bodies and shape, however, ergonomics in fashion classify women body shape into 6 specific categories. Not 10, not 4, not 12 , but 6. So each one of us will to a certain extend fit into one of those categories or in between a combination of two, take into consideration changes due to the passing of time, diet, health and physical activity. The good news is that Fashion Designers create styles that are suited for each one of us and we can look fabulous no matter what, who, where and how old we are!

Rectangle

Triangle

The bust and hips are basically the same size. The waist is less than 9” smaller than the bust. (Sometimes called column, plank, sticks and other non flattering name).

However this is the general shape of most of us women (a poll once mentioned 40%).

Rectangles make the best models as clothes just hang well. The key is to accessorise and dress tastefully, avoid puffy sleeves and bring attention to your waist by using clever cross over and layer style.

Bust is 3.5” or larger than the hips and the waist is less than 9” smaller than the bust.

You might look like that you have larger shoulder, however this is only in proportion of your body.

Your advantage is in wearing halter necks, flowing, floaty skirts and bootlegs. If you are tall, kitten heel will do well and if you are petite, stiletto heels will enhance your figure. (Some might called this shape a goblet, a cornet or lollipop. The 70’s look is good on you particularly if you are tall and slim.

Oval

Inverted Triangle

Where the hips are 2” or more larger than the bust. The waist is less than 9.5” smaller than the bust.

It is important to have trousers and skirts that fasten on the side.

Avoid pleats and skinny trousers.

Go for wide legs trousers and trendy tunics with a loose belt.

Big jewellery is a must.

Avoid block colours (particularly pastels and black) Mix and match and you will look fabulous.

By the way about 20% of women are oval shape (not to be called apple, or any other fruit name please!)

Inverted triangle is the triangle with measurements upside down!

The styles most suited are cowl necks, puffy sleeves, any design that enhance your bust and shoulder. Push up bra are a good solutions for helping that little black dress to make you look fantastic.

You can wear fishtail skirts and any trousers without side pockets. Boots look great on you!

Diamond

Hour Glass

The Diamond shape is very similar to the oval shape body with more enphasis on the waist and smaller bust and thighs.

Floaty tops and vaporous sleeves will give body to your arms and bust. Avoid tight fits and go all out with gorgeous fabrics and small prints.

You have great legs so show them off!

Bust and hips are basically the same size though the bust can e up to 1” larger than the hips. The waist is then 9” or more smaller than the bust.

About 10% of women are ‘hourglass shape’.

Depending of the look you want to achieve, the hourglass shape is best enhanced by fitted, tailored clothes. Rounded shoes, high heels and wedges go well with your shape, however petite or large are (called a ‘cello’ or vase by some fashion critics) you are, a modern 50’s feminine style works well in enhancing your figure.
